Board and train in Somerville, MA
Board and train for Somerville, MA dogs: a fear-free one- or two-week Gloucester stay for calm city manners, a free evaluation and Pup Van pick-up on request.
Training a dog for the densest city around
Somerville packs a lot into a small space: shared porches and stairwells in triple-deckers, narrow sidewalks with recycling bins and scooters, and a steady flow of people at Davis Square, Union Square and the Green Line extension stops. For many dogs that adds up to constant stimulation and very little room to step away.
Our two-week Advanced program is designed for that. It covers everything in Foundation, then spends a second week on distraction proofing, neutrality around dogs and people, confidence building and real-world outings. Puppies and dogs who still need the basics start with one-week Foundation: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners. Gabby, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, recommends one at the assessment.
Somerville’s leash ordinance and its off-leash areas
Under City Ordinance 3-34, dogs must be leashed everywhere in Somerville except posted Off-Leash Recreational Areas. Those include Nunziato Field on Summer Street, the small-dog area at Edward L. Leathers Park on Walnut Street, Zero New Washington Dog Park and Lincoln Park Dog Park on Perry Street.
The off-leash areas close from 10 PM to 8 AM, allow at most three dogs per person, and require a license tag and a dog at least four months old. The Community Path is dog-friendly, but dogs must be leashed at all times there. That combination means a solid recall matters inside the dog runs, while loose-leash walking is the skill you will use everywhere else.
Why the stay format suits Somerville
Gloucester is a long drive from Somerville: I-93 north to I-95/Route 128, then 128 north until the highway ends. Many Somerville households also share a car or do without one. Weekly classes on Cape Ann are simply not practical.
A stay keeps the trips to the essentials: the free evaluation on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30, drop-off, pick-up and go-home coaching. The Pup Van can help with the rest. Its $10 flat fare is only for Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so ask for van pricing from Somerville when you enquire. See our pick-up and drop-off page for how van days work.
What happens while your dog is with us
Each day blends short training sessions with rest and enrichment in our 10,000 sq. ft. facility. Once the evaluation shows your dog is ready, there is time in a playgroup of 7–10 dogs matched by size and temperament, which is a calmer kind of dog contact than a crowded city dog run. Nights are in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, and you get an update every day.
The stay ends with go-home coaching: one lesson for Foundation, two scheduled lessons for Advanced. Tell us about your building and your daily route so we can focus on the moments that matter, such as the front stoop and the walk past the neighbour’s dog.
A Somerville practice ladder
Generalize in small steps. The skill your dog shows at Dogtown has to be rebuilt in each new place, starting where it is easiest. Our generalization guide explains why.
- Inside: place cue while the door opens and people pass in the stairwell
- Quiet side streets early in the morning
- The Community Path on leash at off-peak times, stepping aside for bikes
- Off-leash areas at quiet hours, practising calls out of play
- Davis Square or Assembly Row, and near GLX stations, last of all
License, vaccines and price
Somerville dogs six months and older need a license from the City Clerk at 93 Highland Avenue, valid through December 31 and renewed each January; you can apply online. The city can fine owners of unlicensed dogs, and the off-leash areas require the license tag. Dogtown separately needs proof of Rabies, DHPP (distemper) and Bordetella vaccination before your dog checks in.
Price is set per dog after the assessment, and the temperament evaluation costs nothing. Dogs with significant fear, guarding or a bite history may suit Dogtown’s six-to-ten-week behavior-modification programs better, and Gabby will tell you honestly.
