Training for the Fells starts with knowing its rules

Most Stoneham dogs walk in the Middlesex Fells Reservation, and DCR’s rules there shape what you should train. Dogs must be leashed on the trails; the one designated off-leash area is the Sheepfold, off Route 28 in Stoneham, where dogs must be under voice control. The Fells trail map also sets a limit of four dogs per handler.

That means two skills matter most: polite leash walking on narrow trails with bikes, runners and other dogs, and a recall you can trust at the Sheepfold. Those sit squarely in our programs. Foundation teaches leash skills and recall from scratch; Advanced proofs them against distractions. Our recall and off-leash page is honest about what a stay can and cannot deliver.

Stoneham’s own leash bylaw

Away from the Fells, the town bylaw is strict: dogs must be restrained on a leash anywhere in Stoneham except on the owner’s property or other premises with consent, and dogs are not allowed in municipal cemeteries. Fines rise with each repeat offence, so the leash is the default on every street, field and common.

Practise accordingly. Loose-leash walking on the Town Common or along Main Street is a better everyday goal than off-leash freedom, and it is where your go-home lesson will focus.

Spot Pond deserves a note of its own. It sits inside the Fells, so treat it as DCR land under the reservation’s leash rule, and expect a mix of walkers, runners and cyclists along the roads and paths around it. It is a good middle rung between your street and the busier trailheads: open views let you see other dogs early and step aside before your dog gets too close.

The stay itself

Your dog lives at Dogtown in Gloucester for the program, in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring. Days combine short training sessions, rest and enrichment in our 10,000 sq. ft. facility, and, once the evaluation shows readiness, a small playgroup of 7–10 dogs matched by size and temperament. You receive an update each day.

Gabby, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, leads the assessment that opens every program and sets the goals with you. Foundation finishes with one go-home lesson; Advanced has two scheduled lessons, a real help when the second visit can tackle what went wrong in the first days home.

Why not weekly lessons instead?

From Stoneham, Gloucester is a drive on I-93 and then the full length of Route 128 north. Doing that once a week for a class adds up quickly in time and traffic. A stay compresses the work into daily practice over one or two weeks and reduces your trips to the evaluation, drop-off, pick-up and coaching.

Prefer not to drive at all? The Pup Van can collect board-and-train dogs from Stoneham. The $10 flat fare applies only in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so ask for van pricing from Stoneham when you enquire.

A four-week plan for after pick-up

Generalization takes time, so build it in stages rather than heading straight to the busiest trailhead.

  • Week 1: cues in the house and yard, using the exact words and rewards from the go-home lesson
  • Week 2: quiet streets, then the Town Common on leash
  • Week 3: short, leashed Fells walks near Spot Pond at quiet hours
  • Week 4: recall practice on a long line, then, if it is solid, short off-leash sessions at the Sheepfold

License, vaccines and the cost question

Stoneham licenses run January to December through the Town Clerk, due by March 31 with a $10 late fee from April 1, and you can license online, by mail or in person. Dogtown needs the license plus Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file before the stay.

Price is quoted after the assessment, and the evaluation is free. If your dog has a bite history or serious fear, say so in the enquiry; Gabby may suggest a six-to-ten-week behavior-modification program or a vet visit first. Our cost guide explains what to compare.

FAQs

Related questions

Will my dog be off-leash reliable at the Sheepfold after board and train?
We do not promise that. Advanced builds recall under distraction, and you leave knowing how to keep practising, starting on a long line before trusting it in a busy off-leash field.
Can a dog walker use what my dog learns?
Yes, if they learn the cues too. Bring them to the go-home lesson. Commercial walkers in DCR parks also need DCR’s commercial dog walking permit.
Is there Pup Van service to Stoneham?
Pick-up can be arranged for board-and-train dogs outside the four flat-fare towns. Ask for van pricing from Stoneham in your enquiry.
My dog lunges at bikes on the Fells trails. Which program fits?
Usually Advanced, because its second week works on neutrality and distraction proofing around moving triggers. If the lunging looks fearful rather than excited, Gabby may point you toward a longer behavior-modification program instead.
