Is board and train a good idea for a soft dog like a Cavalier?

It can be, if the program is genuinely gentle and the stay itself is treated as part of the training. Cavaliers are descended from the toy spaniels kept by British royalty, and the breed was refined for one main job: being good company. They tend to be affectionate, eager to please and sensitive to tone of voice. A harsh word or a leash pop can make a Cavalier shut down rather than learn.

That is why a fear- and force-free stay suits the breed. Training at Dogtown uses positive reinforcement and clear communication, and Gabby, our Director of Training and Canine Behaviorist, looks at the why behind each behavior. For a Cavalier the why is often worry or over-attachment, not defiance.

Separation worries: the Cavalier’s most common hurdle

Many Cavaliers struggle when left alone, because a dog bred to sit in a lap does not naturally see the point of an empty house. Some only whine for a minute. Others pace, bark, scratch at doors or have accidents. The second group may be dealing with genuine separation distress, which is a different problem from simple clinginess.

A board and train can help with the building blocks: settling in a crate or on a bed, relaxing while people move around, short absences that end before the dog gets upset, and a predictable routine. It does not replace a careful home program for true separation anxiety, and severe cases may need a vet or veterinary behaviorist too. Our separation anxiety page explains how we tell the difference.

  • Mild: follows you room to room, whines briefly, settles within minutes
  • Moderate: barks or scratches for a while, sometimes has accidents
  • Severe: panics, drools, injures itself or destroys exits: assessed before any stay

Will my Cavalier be stressed being away from me?

Some Cavaliers settle quickly; a few take a day or two. The stay is set up to help: an overnight suite with comfortable bedding and 24/7 monitoring, one comfort item from home, your dog’s usual food, and a daily update so you can see how the week is going. Cavaliers usually enjoy gentle people and many enjoy play, so the social side of the stay often becomes a highlight.

Daycare integration happens only when the free evaluation shows a dog is ready, in a small group of 7–10 dogs matched by size and temperament. For a small, soft dog, that matching matters. A Cavalier should never be thrown in with boisterous large dogs and left to cope.

Health considerations to mention at the assessment

Cavaliers are prone to some significant inherited conditions, most notably mitral valve disease, a heart condition, and syringomyelia, which can make the head and neck painful to touch. Not every Cavalier is affected, but these matter for training. A dog that yelps or snaps when its collar is touched may be in pain, not misbehaving, and a harness is often a kinder choice on walks.

Tell us about any diagnosis, medication or exercise limits at the assessment, and bring medications clearly labeled. If behavior changes suddenly, a vet visit should come before more training. Gentle handling practice for ears, paws and grooming is part of most Cavalier plans; see board and train for fear of handling and grooming.

Foundation or Advanced for a Cavalier

For most Cavaliers, the one-week Foundation program covers what families actually want: house training support, crate comfort, a sit and down, walking without pulling, waiting at doors and polite greetings rather than jumping on every visitor. It ends with one go-home lesson so you can keep it going.

The two-week Advanced program makes sense for a Cavalier who knows the basics at home but falls apart in busy places, or who is anxious around new people and settings and would benefit from paced confidence building and structured socialization. Gabby recommends one or the other at the assessment.

The home plan for a people-pleaser

The good news is that Cavaliers tend to keep practicing gladly when the rewards keep coming. The risk is that families, charmed by a pleading face, quietly reward the old habits: picking the dog up when it whines, letting it jump for attention, or never leaving it alone. The go-home lesson focuses on consistent cues, short daily sessions and a gradual alone-time routine.

Keep the training sessions short and upbeat, use a calm voice, and end on a success. A Cavalier that feels safe learns remarkably quickly.

FAQs

Related questions

Is my Cavalier too sensitive for board and train?
Not for a fear- and force-free program. Sensitive dogs often thrive with clear, gentle training and a predictable routine. If your Cavalier is very anxious, Gabby will say at the assessment whether a stay or a different plan suits better.
Can you help with house training a Cavalier?
Yes. Crate routines, regular outings and reinforcing the right spot are part of Foundation. You learn the same routine at the go-home lesson so it continues at home.
My Cavalier has a heart murmur. Can it still come?
Many dogs with managed conditions can. Tell us at the assessment, share your vet’s advice on exercise, and bring medications clearly labeled. We plan activity around what your vet recommends.
How long should I expect my Cavalier to take to settle?
It varies. Many settle within the first day or two, helped by a familiar comfort item and their usual food. The daily update lets you follow how your dog is doing.
