A retriever under the haircut

The fancy show clip hides the Standard Poodle's working roots. The breed was developed in Germany as a water retriever, and the traditional clip left hair over the joints and chest for warmth in cold water while shaving the rest for swimming. France later adopted the breed so thoroughly that it became the national dog.

What that means today is an athletic, people-focused dog with a retriever's stamina and a problem solver's brain. Standard Poodles want a job and a partner. Left without one, they often invent hobbies such as counter surfing, door watching or barking at the mail carrier.

Why a clever dog can be a hard dog

Intelligence in dogs mostly means learning quickly, and learning doesn't check whether the lesson was a good one. A Standard Poodle who gets a cookie for stopping barking learns to bark first. One who is let out every time it paws the door learns to paw. Owners often find they have accidentally trained a very clever dog to run the house.

In a stay we clean that up by making the rewards consistent. The dog learns which behaviors pay off, and those are the ones you will keep paying at home. Repetition is kept short and varied, because a Poodle asked for the same sit twenty times will start offering creative alternatives instead.

Sensitivity: the trait that shapes the method

Many Standard Poodles are emotionally sensitive. They notice tension in your voice, react to sudden sounds and can shut down if training feels unpredictable or harsh. That is a big reason we never use force with this breed or any other. A worried Poodle stops learning; a confident one learns fast.

Confidence building and structured socialization in the Advanced stay are especially useful here: new rooms, new surfaces, unfamiliar people and noises met gradually and with rewards. If your dog's sensitivity has tipped into reactivity, barking and lunging at dogs or people, our reactive dogs page explains what a stay can and cannot change.

Matching the program to your Poodle

Gabby, Dogtown's Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, makes the recommendation at the assessment, after hearing what daily life looks like. Nothing is booked blind.

Boredom-proofing the stay and the home

A Standard Poodle needs mental work as much as exercise. During the stay that comes from short training sessions, puzzle feeders and scent games, enrichment in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility and, once the evaluation shows your dog is ready, a small playgroup of 7–10 dogs matched by size and temperament.

At home, rotate a few kinds of work across the week: a trick to learn, a sniff walk somewhere new, a food toy before you leave. The go-home coaching shows you how to keep cues sharp without turning practice into drudgery, which matters with a breed that notices when you're going through the motions.

  • Two or three short sessions a day beat one long one
  • New places count as enrichment: a fresh street is a puzzle
  • Retrieving games tap the original job; add a sit before each throw

Grooming and handling go together

A Standard Poodle's coat keeps growing, so regular professional grooming is part of life. Dogs who learned early that handling is safe and rewarding find grooming far easier. The stay includes handling practice for paws, ears and face, and you can ask about combining it with Dogtown's grooming so your dog goes home tidy too. See board and train with grooming for how that works.

FAQs

Related questions

Are Standard Poodles easy to board and train?
Usually they learn quickly. The challenge is keeping training fresh and making sure the stay feels safe for a sensitive dog. With short, varied sessions and plenty of rest, most Poodles thrive.
My Poodle is anxious. Will a stay make it worse?
Not if the stay fits the dog. Gabby looks at your dog's history at the assessment. Mild nerves usually respond well to confidence work in Advanced; serious anxiety may need a longer behavior program or a vet's input first.
Will two weeks away hurt our bond?
No. Dogs form relationships with more than one person, and the go-home coaching is designed to transfer the skills to you. Most dogs settle back in within days.
What's different about a Standard Poodle compared with a doodle?
A purebred Standard brings more predictable Poodle traits: sensitivity, intelligence and a retriever's energy. Doodles vary more because the other parent breed adds its own instincts. The training approach is similar; the plan depends on the individual.
