Dog training at Crane Beach off-season

Crane Beach in Ipswich for dogs, October to March: off leash only in the No Leash Zone, a 6-foot leash elsewhere, two dogs per person and a recall plan.

What are Crane Beach's off-season dog rules?

Dogs may use the beach only in the off-season. The Trustees' winter 2026 handout marks its dog zones as valid October 1 to March 30, while the Trustees' dog page says October 1 to March 31, so treat the last day of March as uncertain and check before you go. In summer, dogs are not allowed.

Inside the No Leash Zone, a dog must be close enough to obey voice commands and must not approach other visitors unless invited. Outside it, a dog must be physically leashed at all times on a leash six feet or shorter, including the parking area and boardwalks. Each person may bring at most two dogs, each with its own leash, and must pick up waste. The full rules are in the Trustees' Crane Estate dog handout.

Below the tide line, out of the dunes

Dogs must stay below the high-tide line except when entering and leaving, and are never allowed in the dunes or beach grass, on the trails, at Castle Hill, at Steep Hill Beach or on Choate Island. Dogs must not disturb seals or other marine mammals resting on the beach.

The Trustees explain why: foot traffic harms wildlife, and dog waste can contaminate shellfish. They also say that, facing persistent violations, they are working with the Town of Ipswich to evaluate the dog policy. Violators can be removed and may be cited under Ipswich bylaws. Following the rules is how the No Leash Zone stays open.

The six-foot leash rule is a training gift

A six-foot limit rules out long lines outside the No Leash Zone, which forces good loose-leash walking from the car to the sand. Use that walk. Ask for a slack leash across the lot and boardwalk, stop whenever it tightens, and reward your dog for walking beside you. By the time you reach the zone, your dog has already done ten minutes of focus work.

Inside the No Leash Zone you may let your dog run, but a trailing long line is still allowed and wise until your recall is reliable. You must be able to call your dog back before it reaches other people, which means you need the recall before you need the freedom.

  • Parking area: leash on, a calm exit from the car
  • Boardwalk: heel and pass other dogs at close range
  • Leashed stretch: loose leash below the high-tide line
  • No Leash Zone: long line first, then short off-leash sets

Recall practice for Crane's big open beach

Crane is wide and long, and at low tide the flats are huge. A dog can be a long way off before you notice. Practise recall on a long line, calling often and rewarding generously, and use 'go play' as a reward so coming back doesn't always end the fun.

Rule of thumb: call once, then move away from your dog, running backward or crouching, rather than repeating the cue. If you don't get the dog back on the first call, the line goes back on. The recall maintenance guide covers what to do when a recall weakens.

Not approaching others is part of the rule

The No Leash Zone rule that dogs must not approach other visitors unless invited is effectively a neutrality requirement. Your dog may not run up to people, children or other dogs whose owners haven't said yes. That's a high standard for a young dog, and an excellent one to train toward.

Practise in the leashed section first: walk past people and dogs, reward your dog for looking and then looking back at you. Our neutrality explainer covers how calm ignoring is built. Dogs who finished the two-week Advanced program have done this kind of work and can use Crane to rehearse it.

Practical notes for a winter session

Check the Trustees' site for current entry fees and opening times before you drive; the beach also has a phone line for current conditions. Winter wind off the ocean is strong and cold, so dress your dog for it if it's short-coated or small.

Bring a standard six-foot leash, a long line for the zone, poop bags and high-value treats. Plan around low tide for space, and leave before your dog tires, since tired dogs ignore cues.
