During the stay

What happens on the first night of board and train?

The first night of board and train: drop-off, a quiet settle in the overnight suite, 24/7 monitoring, familiar food and a comfort item, then your first update.

Night one is about settling, not learning

Even a confident dog arrives at a new building with its stress dial turned up. New smells, new sounds and new people take energy to process, and a dog under that load learns poorly. So good programs treat the first evening as part of the arrival, not part of the curriculum.

What that looks like in practice is a predictable, low-key evening: a chance to sniff and explore, a toilet break, dinner at roughly the usual time, and lights down. Big training sessions, long playgroups and lots of handling are better saved for the days after.

Where your dog sleeps and who is watching

Every Dogtown board-and-train dog sleeps in an overnight suite with comfortable bedding, and the building has 24/7 monitoring. Our where does my dog sleep page covers the suites in more detail.

If you want to know specifics, such as how often dogs are checked overnight or who is on site, ask at the assessment. We confirm those details then rather than guess at them here.

The settle routine you can help build before drop-off

You have more influence over night one than you might think. Most of it comes down to sending familiar things and keeping the handover calm.

  • Food: your dog’s usual food, pre-portioned per meal, so dinner tastes like home
  • One comfort item: a well-used t-shirt, blanket or toy that smells of the house (Dogtown provides bedding)
  • Medications: clearly labeled with dose and timing
  • A calm goodbye: short and cheerful; a long emotional farewell can wind a dog up
  • A normal morning: a usual walk before drop-off, not an extra-long run or a skipped breakfast

What a normal first night can look like

It is common for a dog to pace a little, sniff every corner, or vocalize briefly before settling. Some dogs eat less at the first meal. Others fall asleep in minutes because the drive and the new smells wore them out. None of those reactions predicts how the stay will go.

Most dogs follow a curve: the first night is the most unsettled, the second is easier, and by the third the new routine starts to feel familiar. If your dog tends to cry or pant at night, our page on crying at night during board and train explains what helps and what to ask.

Your first update and the first full day

You will hear how arrival went in your first daily update; the exact format is confirmed at booking. Good first updates are honest. A note that your dog was a bit restless at bedtime but ate breakfast and enjoyed a sniff walk is a sign the team is paying attention, not a sign something is wrong.

The first full day usually eases in with short sessions and plenty of rest. Playgroup comes only when the evaluation and the team agree your dog is ready, in a small group of 7–10 dogs matched by size and temperament.

FAQs

Related questions

Should I call to check on my dog the first night?
You can, but try to let the daily update do its job. The first night tends to look worse in the owner’s imagination than it does in the suite.
Can I bring my dog’s own bed?
Dogtown provides bedding, so one smaller comfort item is the better choice. A t-shirt you have worn is light, washable and smells strongly of home.
What if my dog has never slept away from home?
Tell us at the assessment. A dog who has never been away may need a slower first evening, and knowing that in advance helps the team plan it.
Does drop-off time affect the first night?
It can. A daytime arrival gives your dog a few hours to explore before bedtime. Drop-off times are agreed when you book.
