Board and train for busy professionals

Long hours or a commute? How board and train fits a working schedule, when Canine Campus day training is the better choice, and a 10-minute daily upkeep plan.

Why board and train fits a full work week

The hardest part of training a dog is the volume of short, well-timed repetitions in the early stage. That is exactly what a busy schedule cannot supply. A residential stay moves that stage to a trainer, so the learning happens during your work hours rather than in the half hour you have left at night.

Your part is smaller and later: following the daily update, turning up for go-home coaching, and practicing briefly afterwards. For people who have tried classes and could not keep up with the homework, this order often works better.

Fitting the steps around a commute

Each step has been planned with working hours in mind. The enquiry gets a reply within one hour on business days. The assessment with Gabby is short. The free evaluation, a temperament test that also shows playgroup readiness, takes place on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, which many commuters fold in before heading to the office or the train.

Dogtown is open 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM Monday to Friday and 8 AM to 6 PM on Saturday. If you live in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea, the Pup Van can collect and return your dog for $10 each way; farther afield, ask for van pricing from your town when you enquire.

When Canine Campus is the better choice

Some working owners do not want their dog away overnight, or have a dog who does better sleeping at home. Canine Campus is Dogtown’s hybrid day training: your dog trains during the day and goes home with you at night. It is booked through the sister site, dogtowndaycare.com.

The trade-off is that you carry the evenings. Campus suits owners who can practice for a few minutes each night and want training spread across their week. Board and train suits owners who want the groundwork done in one concentrated block. Our page on the difference between board and train and day training sets the two side by side.

A 10-minute daily upkeep plan

Skills fade when they are never asked for, but they do not need long sessions to stay sharp. Ten minutes a day, broken into small pieces that hang off things you already do, is enough for most dogs after a stay.

Put the plan somewhere you will see it, like a note by the coffee machine. Busy weeks are when practice quietly disappears, and a visible checklist is often what keeps it going.

  • Before breakfast (2 minutes): sit and wait for the bowl, then a release
  • Leaving for work (1 minute): place on the mat while you put on your shoes and coat
  • Evening walk (5 minutes): loose-leash stretches and a few recalls on a long line
  • Dinner (2 minutes): settle on the mat while you eat, with a chew
  • Weekend: one slightly harder outing, such as a busier street or park

Making the weekdays easier for your dog

Training helps, but long days alone are still long days. Plan for midday breaks with a walker, daycare or Academy days, especially for young or high-energy dogs. A dog with an outlet during the day is far more able to use its training in the evening.

Enrichment fills the gaps cheaply. A frozen food toy, a snuffle mat or a puzzle feeder before you leave gives your dog something to do with its brain and makes the door closing a good sign rather than a sad one. If your dog panics when left, rather than simply being bored, read our page on separation anxiety before booking anything.

FAQs

Related questions

Do I need to take time off for the go-home lesson?
Plan to attend it in person, because it is where the skills move to you. The timing is arranged with you at booking; ask early if you need it to fit around work.
Can the stay start or end on a weekend?
Saturday hours are 8 AM to 6 PM. Sunday is reserved for overnight pick-up and drop-off, and whether a board-and-train stay can start or end on a Sunday is confirmed at booking.
I travel for work. Can my dog train while I am away?
Many owners time a stay around a work trip. You will need to be back for the go-home coaching, so plan the end date around your return. See our page on board and train while on vacation.
