Trail dogs need a recall that works in the woods

Boxford is a woods-and-trails town, and many Boxford dogs spend their happiest hours on a path somewhere. Woods are also where recall is hardest: scent everywhere, deer and turkeys moving, other dogs appearing around bends. A dog that comes when called in the yard and vanishes after a smell on the trail is the classic Boxford enquiry.

Recall is taught in both programs and proofed against real distraction in the two-week Advanced program. We never promise a dog that will always come back; we make sure you know how to keep building it, with a long line until the response is fast every time.

Hunting season in Boxford State Forest

Boxford State Forest is not on the state’s list of DCR properties closed to hunting, so hunting is allowed there in season under 302 CMR 12.11. Check MassWildlife for current season dates before fall walks, put blaze orange on yourself and your dog, and keep your dog close and leashed.

A sudden shot nearby is also a training moment. A dog that has learned to check in with you when something startling happens recovers faster and stays with you. The confidence-building in Advanced, paced and gentle, is designed for exactly that kind of resilience. If your dog is truly noise-phobic, tell us; that is a fear issue Gabby will assess first.

Foundation, Advanced and the honest middle ground

Foundation is one week of essentials: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and crate and household manners, plus one go-home lesson. It suits puppies and young dogs, and older dogs who missed the basics.

Advanced is two weeks and suits dogs who know their cues but not under pressure. Gabby, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, recommends one at the assessment. If fear, guarding or a bite history is part of the story, she may recommend Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification program; our page on fearful and shut-down dogs explains how that works.

How the days run at Dogtown

Your dog lives at 210 Eastern Ave for the stay. Days are a balance of short training sessions, rest and enrichment in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility, with a small playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament once the evaluation shows your dog is ready.

When the training day ends, your dog beds down in an overnight suite, with staff monitoring through the night. A daily update keeps you in touch, and the stay ends with go-home coaching, so the recall your dog learned with us works when you are the one calling.

A trail practice ladder for Boxford

Start in the yard with the cue and reward from the go-home lesson, calling your dog away from small distractions. Move to a quiet road on a long line. Then a trail at a quiet time, still on the line, calling your dog back from sniffs and paying generously. Our long line explainer covers how to handle one safely.

Only drop the line after weeks of fast responses, and pick it back up in hunting season, near roads, or anywhere wildlife is active. Check posted rules for any town forest or conservation land you use.

Getting there, license and price

Take I-95 south to Route 128 and follow 128 north to its end in Gloucester. The free evaluation is a weekday-morning appointment, between 6:30 and 9:30. Board-and-train dogs can also travel by Pup Van from Boxford, priced on request; mention it on the enquiry form.

Boxford licenses come from the Town Clerk at Town Hall, 7A Spofford Rd, and dogs new to town must be licensed within 31 days. Bring the license and Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records to the evaluation. Each stay is quoted after the assessment.

FAQs

Related questions

Should my dog wear blaze orange on Boxford trails?
In hunting season, it is sensible for you and your dog, particularly in the state forest where hunting is permitted. Check MassWildlife for season dates.
Will two weeks make my dog safe off leash in the woods?
No program can promise that. Advanced gives a strong foundation; reliability comes from weeks of practice on a long line afterwards.
We just moved to Boxford. Do we need a license before the stay?
Yes. Boxford asks new residents to license their dog within 31 days, and we need a current license on file before the stay.
My dog chases deer. Can that be trained out?
Chasing is deeply rewarding for many dogs, so we focus on impulse control, a fast recall and management with a long line. Gabby will be honest about what is realistic for your dog at the assessment.
