Topsfield, MA
Topsfield, MA board and train
Board and train for Topsfield, MA dogs: one or two weeks of fear-free training in Gloucester, ready for fair season and trails. Free evaluation, van on request.
Fair season changes the town for a few weeks
Every October the Topsfield Fair fills the fairgrounds on Route 1, and the traffic, parking and noise spill into town. The fair lists its 2027 dates as October 1 to 11 on the Topsfield Fair website; check there for the current year. For a dog who lives nearby, that means weeks of unfamiliar cars, crowds on the roadside and sounds carrying from the grounds.
You can’t train the fair away, but you can prepare. A dog that can settle on a mat, walk past a group of strangers on a loose leash and recover quickly from a sudden noise copes far better. That is the territory of the two-week Advanced program, which proofs cues against distraction and builds confidence.
Where dogs can and can’t walk around Topsfield
Mass Audubon’s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary on Perkins Row does not allow dogs or pets at all, only service animals, so leave your dog at home there, per Mass Audubon. It is one of the region’s best-known trail networks, which is why the rule catches people out.
Bradley Palmer State Park, largely in Topsfield, is the more dog-friendly choice: a large DCR park popular for leashed walks, and one that is closed to hunting under state rules. Check DCR’s current dog rules before you go. Its wide paths and steady stream of walkers make it a good place to practise calm passing once your dog is home.
Choosing the length of stay
The one-week Foundation stay is for puppies and young dogs, covering obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners, with one go-home lesson.
The two-week Advanced stay is for dogs who need those skills to hold up in public. It adds distraction proofing, outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization, and you get two go-home lessons. Gabby makes the call at the assessment, and dogs with strong fear, guarding or a bite history may be pointed toward Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification program.
What your dog’s days look like
The stay is built around short training sessions spread through the day, with rest and enrichment between them in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility. Dogs who are ready also join a small playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament.
Overnight, dogs rest in a suite with comfortable bedding and 24/7 monitoring, so the next day starts fresh. You get a daily update, in a format confirmed at booking, and the program is led by Gabriella Pope, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, who has spent more than a decade with behaviorally complex dogs.
Building up after the stay
Start at home and on your own road, with the cues and rewards you learned at the go-home lesson. Move on to Bradley Palmer on a quiet weekday, then to the town common or a busier time at the park. Save anything near the fairgrounds in October for last, and keep it short.
If your dog struggles, add distance and go back a step rather than pushing on. Our guide to handling regression after board and train explains why a wobble is normal and how to recover.
- Home and road: the first week, exactly as taught
- Bradley Palmer State Park, leashed, quiet times
- Busier times on the trails and around the common
- Fair season: brief, planned outings at a distance
Route, license and price
From Topsfield, take Route 1 south to Route 128 and head north to its end in Gloucester. Weekday mornings from 6:30 to 9:30 are when the free evaluation is held. The Pup Van can also collect board-and-train dogs from Topsfield, priced on request because only the four Cape Ann towns have the $10 flat fare.
Topsfield licenses run for the calendar year through the Town Clerk and are due by January 31, with a late fee from February 1. Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records go on file with us too. The stay is quoted after the assessment; start with the enquiry form.
