Board and train in Burlington, MA
Board and train for Burlington, MA dogs: one- or two-week fear-free stays in Gloucester for recall and manners, a free evaluation and van pick-up on request.
Burlington’s bylaw puts recall front and centre
Unusually, Burlington’s general bylaws allow a dog off its owner’s premises to be either on a leash or “obedient to command”, as long as a competent person aged at least 12 is with it. In plain terms: voice control is legal in many places here, but only if your dog actually responds.
That raises the bar for recall. A dog who comes when called in the kitchen but not when a squirrel crosses the path is not under voice control. Foundation teaches recall from the ground up; Advanced adds distance, duration and distraction, plus real-world outings, so the cue holds when it matters. We never promise off-leash reliability, and our recall page explains why long-line practice comes first.
Why most Burlington owners pick a stay over weekly lessons
Gloucester is at the opposite end of Route 128 from Burlington, and that road is rarely empty. Weekly classes would mean the same drive every week; a board-and-train stay means a handful of visits.
You come for the free evaluation on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30, bring your dog for the stay, and return for pick-up and go-home coaching. Meanwhile your dog trains daily, rests in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, and joins a matched playgroup of 7–10 dogs once ready. A daily update keeps you posted.
Using the Burlington Dog Park well
The town dog park at Rahanis Park, 84 Mill Street, has rules that are worth knowing before you take a newly trained dog. It is open dawn to dusk, handlers must be 18 or older, each handler may bring at most three dogs, children under 12 are not allowed in, and dogs under six months or in heat must stay out. Dogs stay leashed until the double-gated holding area, and there are separate active and passive sections.
The holding area is a training opportunity. Ask for a sit and a moment of calm before you unclip, and practise calling your dog out of play once or twice, rewarding well each time and letting them go back. That way leaving the park is not always the end of fun.
Trails, the mall and other practice grounds
Mary Cummings Park, on the Burlington and Woburn border, is owned by the City of Boston and managed by the Trustees, and it allows dogs on leash. Its open meadows and trails give you room to practise loose-leash walking and calm passing. The Landlocked Forest has miles of trails reached from Turning Mill Road on the Lexington side; check the current dog rules before using it.
For an urban challenge, the outdoor walkways and parking areas around Burlington Mall and Third Avenue are full of cars, carts and people. Only go there once your dog can settle calmly on a quiet street, and stay at the edges at first.
Choosing the right program
Gabby, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, helps you decide at a short assessment. Foundation suits puppies and young dogs and covers obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control, crate manners and household habits, with one go-home lesson. Advanced suits adolescents and dogs who struggle with distractions, and adds proofing, neutrality, confidence work and outings over a second week, with two scheduled go-home lessons.
Dogs with significant fear, reactivity or guarding may need Dogtown’s six-to-ten-week behavior-modification programs instead. Our 1 week vs 2 weeks comparison can help you think it through before the call.
License, cost and the van
Burlington licenses come from the Town Clerk and run for one, two or three years, tied to your dog’s rabies vaccination; payment is online. A current license and Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records are required before the stay.
Price is quoted after the assessment; the evaluation is free. The Pup Van’s $10 flat fare is for Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea only, so ask for van pricing from Burlington when you enquire.
