No leash law in Essex, which raises the stakes on recall

Essex is one of the few North Shore towns that says plainly it has no leash law. The town’s dog license page explains that dogs must not be a nuisance and owners must pick up after them, with fines that start with a warning and rise steeply for repeat offenses. Freedom from a leash requirement only works if your dog comes back when called and leaves people, livestock and other dogs alone.

That is why so many Essex enquiries are really about recall and impulse control. Both programs teach them; the longer one proofs them against the distractions that matter here, from a dog loose across the road to a heron lifting off the marsh.

Where Essex dogs may and may not go

The same town page lays out some firm limits. Dogs are not allowed in any public park except Centennial Grove, and even there they must be supervised, on a leash or under direct control, and they are banned in June, July and August. Public beaches are also closed to dogs in those three summer months.

So the summer is a season of leash walks, and the shoulder seasons are when Centennial Grove and the beaches open up for recall practice. Rules can change, so check with the Town Clerk before relying on a date.

  • Centennial Grove: allowed outside June to August, supervised and leashed or under direct control
  • Public beaches: no dogs in June, July and August
  • Other public parks: no dogs
  • Everywhere: pick up after your dog and keep it from being a nuisance

Route 133 in summer is a training exercise in itself

Anyone who has driven Route 133 through Essex on a summer weekend knows the traffic around the clam shacks and antique shops. For a dog, the sidewalks along the causeway mean cars, motorcycles, smells of fried food and a steady stream of people. A dog that can walk that stretch calmly on a loose leash can handle most places.

Advanced is the program aimed at that kind of public reliability. Our guide to training at the Essex River and causeway shows how to build up to it, starting on a quiet weekday in spring rather than a Saturday in July.

Picking a program

The one-week Foundation stay teaches obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and crate and household manners, then hands them to you in one go-home lesson. The two-week Advanced stay adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization, with two go-home lessons.

Gabby, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, leads the short assessment and recommends one. If your dog is fearful, guards things or has bitten, she will tell you honestly whether board and train fits or whether Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification program is the better path.

The stay, and the van at each end

On day one the Pup Van collects your dog from home for $10 and brings it to Gloucester; at the end it brings your dog back for another $10. In between, your dog sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, trains daily in short sessions, gets enrichment in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility and joins a small playgroup of 7 to 10 matched dogs once the evaluation shows it is ready.

You get an update every day, in a format confirmed at booking. The go-home lesson can be scheduled so you see the cues in action before your dog settles back into Essex life.

License, vaccines and cost

Essex dog licenses come from the Town Clerk and are due by March 31, with a late fee after that. On our side, the vaccine file must show Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella. Bring a pre-portioned food supply, any medication clearly labeled and one comfort item.

The stay is quoted after the assessment. Our board and train cost page explains what goes into that figure; the van is the one fixed number, at $10 each way.

FAQs

Related questions

If Essex has no leash law, why train leash skills?
Because Gloucester, Ipswich and most neighbors do have leash rules, vets and groomers expect a calm dog on leash, and summer closes most Essex public spaces to dogs anyway.
Does the Pup Van come out to Conomo Point?
The $10 fare covers all of Essex. Give your address and preferred times on the enquiry form.
Can my dog run at Centennial Grove after the stay?
Outside June to August, under the current town rules, if it is supervised and on a leash or under direct control. Test recall on a long line first.
