The Pup Van makes Rockport the easiest town to book from

Rockport sits inside the Pup Van’s flat-fare zone, so pick-up and drop-off cost $10 each way, the same as in Gloucester. For a board-and-train stay that means one trip at the start and one at the end, and your dog arrives at Dogtown without you rearranging a work morning. Our pick-up and drop-off page explains how the van is booked.

If you would rather drive, it is a short hop: Route 127A south along Thatcher Road past Good Harbor, and you are on Eastern Ave. The free evaluation runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, which many Rockport owners fit in before work.

What Rockport asks of a dog, season by season

Rockport’s rules change with the calendar, so a Rockport dog needs skills that work in both halves of the year. The town’s beach and park regulations bar dogs from every public beach, including Front, Back, Old Garden, Long and Pebble beaches, from June 1 to September 15. Parks require a leash or voice control, and parks and beaches close from 11 PM to 6 AM.

Summer, then, is a leash season spent on sidewalks and trails, often near crowds. Off-season, the beaches reopen to dogs and recall suddenly matters. On public property elsewhere, the town expects dogs to be leashed or under direct voice control, and the bylaw treats downtown differently, so keep the leash on in the village center and check the current wording with the town. Dogs are not allowed in town cemeteries.

Bearskin Neck and Dock Square: a summer test

Few places on the North Shore pack more distraction into a smaller space than Bearskin Neck on a July afternoon. Narrow lanes, ice cream at nose height, strollers, gulls and tourists who want to pet your dog all arrive at once. It is a brilliant final exam and a poor first outing.

That is the job of the two-week Advanced program: proofing cues against distraction, real-world outings and neutrality, so your dog can walk past a dropped cone and a friendly stranger without losing its head. Use our guide to training at Bearskin Neck once you are home, starting on a quiet weekday morning in spring.

Foundation for puppies, Advanced for teenagers

The one-week Foundation stay covers sit, down, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and crate and household manners, with one go-home lesson. It is built for puppies and young dogs. Advanced takes two weeks, includes everything in Foundation and adds the distraction work above, plus two coaching lessons for you.

Gabby, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, recommends one at the assessment. If your dog’s issue is fear, guarding or a bite history, she will say so honestly; some of those dogs suit Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification program instead.

Halibut Point and other places to practise

Halibut Point Reservation, run by the Trustees at the end of Gott Ave, requires dogs to be leashed at all times and is open sunrise to sunset, according to the Trustees. The quarry rim and rocky paths make it a good place to practise loose-leash walking with real interest around you. Our Halibut Point guide has a session plan.

Rockport station, at the end of the Rockport branch, is another useful spot on a quiet morning: arrive, settle your dog on a mat, reward calm while a train comes and goes. In the off-season, the reopened beaches become your recall field, with a long line until the recall is solid.

  • Spring: Halibut Point on leash, quiet lanes, the station platform early
  • Summer: leash walks only, avoid beaches, short visits near Dock Square
  • After Sept 15: beaches on a long line for recall practice
  • Winter: quiet Bearskin Neck mornings, building toward busy days

Paperwork and the price conversation

Rockport licenses dogs through the Town Clerk, and the town asks for a current rabies certificate. For our files, bring proof of Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella before the stay. Pack pre-portioned food, labeled medication and one comfort item; bedding and enrichment are provided.

The stay itself is quoted after the assessment rather than published, because the right plan depends on your dog. The only fixed number on this page is the van: $10 each way from Rockport.

FAQs

When can my dog go back on Front Beach?
After September 15, under the town’s current regulations, and not between 11 PM and 6 AM. Check the latest rules before you go, as towns revise them.
My dog is great at home but pulls toward every tourist downtown. Which program?
Usually Advanced, because the second week is spent on distraction proofing and neutrality around people. Gabby confirms the fit at the assessment.
