City dogs need city skills

Lynn’s animal control ordinances are short and strict: no dog may run at large at any time, so a dog off its own property must be leashed, inside or in a fenced yard, as the City of Lynn sets out. That makes the leash the center of a Lynn dog’s life.

City sidewalks also bring the full mix of triggers in a small space: buses, delivery trucks, kids on scooters, other dogs behind fences and people coming round corners. A dog that copes with all of that calmly has skills it learned through many repetitions, which is what a board and train provides.

The stay, from assessment to go-home lesson

Every program starts with a short assessment with Gabby, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, to talk through goals and choose Foundation or Advanced. A free evaluation on a weekday morning comes next, then the stay itself at 210 Eastern Ave.

Your dog trains daily in short sessions, rests, gets enrichment in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility, and joins a small playgroup of 7 to 10 matched dogs once it is ready. It sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring. A daily update keeps you posted, and the stay ends with go-home coaching, so the skills work for you.

Foundation or Advanced for a Lynn dog

Foundation, one week, is the starting point for puppies and young dogs: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners, with one go-home lesson. Advanced, two weeks, is for dogs who know the cues but fall apart in public, adding distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and two go-home lessons.

City dogs who bark and lunge at other dogs are often frustrated rather than aggressive, and Advanced can help. Dogs whose reactions come from fear, or who have bitten, are assessed carefully; Gabby may recommend Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification program. Our page on dog-dog reactivity explains the difference.

Places to practise in Lynn

Barkland Dog Park on Parkland Ave is the city’s off-leash option. Dogs need a tag, proof of vaccination and a city license, handlers must be over 18, and children under 10, food, smoking and alcohol are not allowed, per the same city page. It is a good place to practise calling your dog away from play.

Lynn Woods Reservation offers miles of trails; keep your dog leashed and check the reservation’s current rules. Along Lynn Shore and Nahant Beach, a state reservation, dogs are not allowed on the beach from April 1 to September 15, per the state’s listing; the shoreline walk outside those dates is a good loose-leash route with real-world distraction.

  • Start: your block, at a quiet hour
  • Then: Lynn Woods on leash, rewarding check-ins
  • Then: Barkland at a quiet time, with recall away from play
  • Later: Lynn Shore in the off-season, and the station platform

From Lynn to Gloucester

Most Lynn families head north on Route 1A or Route 107 to Salem, cross the bridge into Beverly on 1A and pick up Route 128 north to its end in Gloucester. Plan the free evaluation for a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, ahead of the worst of the commuter traffic.

If the drive is hard to fit in, the Pup Van can collect board-and-train dogs from Lynn. Its $10 flat fare covers only the four Cape Ann towns, so ask for van pricing from Lynn on the enquiry form.

License, records and price

Lynn licenses dogs through the City Clerk in City Hall, Room 201, with renewals due by April 1 each year. Bring the license and records for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella to the evaluation, and pack pre-portioned food, labeled medication and one comfort item.

Each stay is quoted after the assessment because no two dogs need the same plan. See our cost guide for what shapes the price.

FAQs

Related questions

Can my dog ride the commuter rail from Lynn after the stay?
Check the MBTA’s current pet rules first. A calm visit to the Lynn Interim platform is a good neutrality exercise either way; see riding the commuter rail.
My dog barks at every dog behind a fence. Will one week fix it?
We never promise a fix. Fence barking is usually an Advanced-level problem, because it needs neutrality work and practice in real places.
Is Lynn too far for a board and train in Gloucester?
Many families find a residential stay easier than weekly classes because there is only a drive at each end, or a van pick-up.
Can a Lynn apartment dog do board and train?
Yes. Apartment dogs often benefit most from calm-in-the-hallway and quiet-at-the-door work. See board and train for apartment and condo dogs.
