Board and train near Saugus, MA

Board and train for Saugus, MA dogs: a one- or two-week fear-free stay in Gloucester for a 24-hour leash town. Free evaluation, van pick-up priced on request.

A 24-hour leash town

The town’s dog license application states plainly that Saugus has adopted bylaws calling for a 24-hour leash law and a limit of three dogs per household, per the 2026 application. There is no off-leash hour in the morning and no open field where the rules relax.

So the leash is not a training tool you graduate from; it is the way your dog will meet the world. Good leash manners make every outing easier, and poor ones make every outing a fight. That is where a board and train earns its keep.

Training for a Route 1 town

Route 1 cuts through the middle of Saugus, and plenty of Saugus walks happen within earshot of it. Trucks, horns, car doors and busy parking lots are everyday sounds here. A dog that startles at every one of them, or pulls toward every person crossing a lot, has a stressful time.

Advanced, the two-week program, spends its second week proofing cues against that kind of distraction and building confidence around new sounds and surfaces. Foundation, the one-week program, lays the groundwork with leash skills, impulse control and a reliable sit and stay. For dogs that are truly frightened of traffic, Gabby will look at the fear itself first; see our page on anxious dogs.

Breakheart and the Iron Works: two very different practice spots

Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site welcomes pets on a leash no longer than six feet, but not in buildings, and asks visitors not to leave pets unattended and to pick up after them, according to the National Park Service. Its lawns and river paths are calm and compact, a good early outing after the stay.

Breakheart Reservation, a state reservation, is bigger and busier, with wooded trails, ponds and plenty of other dogs. DCR lists a fenced off-leash area there; check the state’s dogs in DCR parks guide for current rules before you go, and keep your dog leashed on the trails and in parking areas.

  • First: your street, using the cues exactly as taught
  • Next: the Iron Works on a six-foot leash, at a quiet hour
  • Then: Breakheart’s trails on leash, with other dogs at a distance
  • Later: busier places along Route 1, briefly, and leaving on a success

Foundation and Advanced in one look

Foundation is one week: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control, crate and household manners, and daycare integration once ready, with one go-home lesson. Advanced is two weeks: all of that plus distraction proofing, outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization, with two go-home lessons. Read more on the programs page.

Gabby, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, makes the recommendation at the assessment. If fear, guarding or a bite history is part of the picture, she may suggest one of Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification programs.

Living at Dogtown for a week or two

Every stay includes an overnight suite with comfortable bedding and 24/7 monitoring, daily training in short sessions, enrichment in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility and a small playgroup of 7 to 10 matched dogs when the evaluation shows your dog is ready. A daily update keeps you posted, and the stay ends with go-home coaching.

Getting there, and getting ready

From Saugus, drive Route 1 north to Route 128, then follow 128 north through Peabody and Beverly to its end in Gloucester. Evaluation appointments are early: weekdays, 6:30 to 9:30 AM. Saugus families can also book the Pup Van; ask for van pricing from Saugus on the enquiry form, since the $10 fare covers only the Cape Ann towns.

Licenses come from the Saugus Town Clerk at 298 Central St. The 2026 license year runs from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027, with a late fee after June 30. Alongside the license we ask for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. The stay is quoted after the assessment.

FAQs

Related questions

I have three dogs. Can they all come?
Each dog gets its own assessment and plan, and Gabby will talk through whether they train together or separately. Saugus’s three-dog household limit is a town rule; check with the clerk if you are unsure.
Can my dog use the off-leash area at Breakheart after the stay?
Once it comes away from play when called and greets politely. Check DCR’s current rules for the area first.
What should I bring to the evaluation?
Your dog on a leash, the Saugus license and vaccination records. The evaluation is free and also shows whether your dog is ready for playgroup.
Is board and train better than a weekly class for a Saugus dog?
It depends on your schedule and your dog. A stay packs in daily practice; a class teaches you alongside your dog over time. Our board and train vs group classes page compares them honestly.
