Salem, NH, not Salem, MA

First, a quick clarification, because we hear from both: this page is for Salem, New Hampshire, on I-93 at the Massachusetts line. If you live in Salem, Massachusetts, see our Salem, MA page instead; that drive and its rules are quite different.

For Salem, NH families, Dogtown is a highway trip into Massachusetts. The usual route is I-93 south to I-495, I-495 east to I-95, I-95 south to Peabody, then Route 128 north until it ends in Gloucester. That is too far to drive every week, which is why a stay is the more practical choice.

Salem’s leash rules and park rules

Salem adopted the state’s running-at-large provision at Town Meeting, so dogs may not roam off their owner’s property except in narrow situations such as hunting or herding. In town parks the rules are tighter still: dogs are allowed only on a leash of six feet or less, only in areas not posted otherwise, and the handler must remove waste.

That makes leash skills the core of any Salem training plan. Hedgehog Park on Lowell Road, with its walking trails, falls under those park rules and is a good early step after the stay. Both of our programs teach loose-leash walking; Advanced proofs it on real-world outings so it holds up near other dogs and people.

A practical tip: carry two leashes on early outings, a standard six-foot lead for parks and sidewalks and a long line for practising recall in your own yard or another fenced, private space. Swapping between them is part of what you will rehearse at the go-home lesson.

Tuscan Village, the malls and the I-93 corridor

Salem’s busiest places are commercial: the Mall at Rockingham Park, Tuscan Village with its restaurants, shops and events, and the strip of retail along I-93 and Route 28. Large car parks, crowds and constant movement make them challenging for young or excitable dogs.

If that is where your dog struggles, the two-week Advanced program is often the right fit. Its second week focuses on distraction proofing, neutrality and confidence. After the stay, start at the quiet edge of a car park at an off-peak hour and reward calm watching before you move closer. Check each venue’s own rules about dogs before you go.

Why a stay, not weekly sessions

A stay compresses the learning into one or two weeks of daily practice. Your dog trains in short sessions every day, rests in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, gets enrichment in our 10,000 sq. ft. facility, and joins a playgroup of 7–10 matched dogs once ready. You get a daily update.

Your own trips are few: the free evaluation on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30, drop-off, pick-up and go-home coaching. If the drive is the obstacle, the Pup Van can collect your dog. Its $10 flat fare is for Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea only; ask for van pricing from Salem, NH when you enquire. Our busy professionals page shows how families fit it around work.

Choosing Foundation or Advanced

Gabby, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, leads a short assessment before anything is booked and recommends a program.

  • Foundation, 1 week: puppies and young dogs. Obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control, crate and household manners. One go-home lesson.
  • Advanced, 2 weeks: adolescents and dogs who struggle in public. Foundation plus distraction proofing, outings, neutrality, confidence and structured socialization. Two scheduled go-home lessons.
  • Behavior modification, 6–10 weeks: for some dogs with significant fear, reactivity or resource guarding. Gabby will tell you honestly if this fits better.

License, rabies proof and price

New Hampshire licenses expire on April 30 each year. In Salem, the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall, 33 Geremonty Drive, issues them, with online renewal through eb2gov and proof of current rabies vaccination required. After a short grace period, monthly late charges and a forfeiture apply, and the town says the forfeiture cannot be waived. Dogtown also needs Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records before check-in.

We give you a figure for the stay once Gabby has met your dog, and the evaluation costs nothing. Our cost guide explains what to compare between programs.
