Questions · Requirements
Does my dog need a city license for board and train?
Yes: a current city or town dog license is required for board and train at Dogtown, alongside Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella. How licensing works in Massachusetts.
Why a license is on the requirements list
It's the law, and it ties into rabies protection. Under Massachusetts General Laws chapter 140, section 137, the owner or keeper of a dog over six months old must license it in the city or town where the dog is kept, and the license can't be issued without a veterinarian's certification of rabies vaccination.
For a board-and-train program, a current license confirms that your dog is legally registered and gives one more record of rabies status. It's one of four things to have in place before the stay, with the vaccinations and the free evaluation.
- Rabies, DHPP (distemper) and Bordetella vaccinations on file
- A current city or town dog license
- The free evaluation, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM
- Minimum age for puppies confirmed at the assessment
How to get a dog license in Massachusetts
Contact the clerk's office in the city or town where your dog lives. Most ask for proof of a current rabies vaccination and, for a reduced fee where offered, proof of spay or neuter. Many towns let you apply by mail or online. Fees and renewal dates are set locally, so check your own town's page.
Gloucester dogs are licensed through the Gloucester City Clerk; Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea dogs through their own town clerks. If you live in Beverly, Salem or elsewhere, use your own city's clerk. The license follows where the dog lives, not where it trains.
What if my puppy is too young to license?
State law applies to dogs over six months, and puppies can start training younger than that. If your puppy is under licensing age, say so in your enquiry; how a young puppy's requirements are handled is confirmed at the assessment, along with the minimum age for the stay itself.
The vaccinations still matter for young puppies. Ask your vet when your puppy's DHPP series, rabies and Bordetella will be complete, and plan the stay after that. Our puppy board and train page covers timing.
Licenses from outside Massachusetts
Families from southern New Hampshire also send dogs to Dogtown. New Hampshire towns license dogs too, through the town clerk; follow your own town's rules and bring that license. A current license from your home city or town is what's required, whichever state it's in.
Summer residents with a dog licensed back home should bring that license. If you're unsure whether yours counts as current, ask at the assessment before you book.
Licenses also matter after the stay
Many of the places you'll practise in afterwards ask for it. Gloucester's off-leash beach conditions require licensed, vaccinated dogs wearing their tags, and Manchester-by-the-Sea requires dogs on its beaches to be licensed and vaccinated. The rules published for the Gloucester Dog Park ask for current license and rabies tags.
Keep the tag on your dog's collar or harness. It's the fastest way for a dog to get home if it slips its leash. See Good Harbor's off-season rules for an example of how license rules apply to practice spots.
