Board and train in Amesbury, MA
Board and train for Amesbury, MA dogs: one or two weeks of force-free training in Gloucester, a free temperament test and van pick-up quoted on request.
Amesbury is a leash-everywhere city, so train for it
Amesbury’s parks and recreation rules require dogs to be leashed at all times and waste picked up, according to the city’s facility rules. The city’s page for Batchelder Park and the Powow Hill conservation area repeats the leash-at-all-times rule. We did not find a public off-leash dog park in the city.
That shapes what a good training plan looks like for an Amesbury dog. Loose-leash walking is not a nice extra here; it is how your dog will spend almost every outing. A dog that pulls, lunges or spins on the leash makes every walk on Woodsom Farm or up Powow Hill harder than it needs to be, and that is exactly the work a board and train does well.
How a stay at Dogtown works
It starts with a short assessment with Gabby, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, who brings ten-plus years of work with behaviorally complex dogs. You talk through goals and agree on Foundation or Advanced. A free evaluation on a weekday morning follows, which also shows whether your dog is ready for a small playgroup.
During the stay your dog trains every day, rests between sessions, gets enrichment in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility and sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring. You receive a daily update. At the end you take the leash at the go-home lesson, so the skills move from our handlers to you.
One week or two for an Amesbury dog?
One week, the Foundation program, suits puppies and young dogs that need the basics: sit, down, place, stay, recall, crate manners and walking on a loose leash. Two weeks, the Advanced program, suits teenage dogs that know the words but fall apart on a busy sidewalk or when another dog appears.
Advanced adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality around dogs and people, and confidence building, and gives you two go-home lessons rather than one. Dogs whose problem is fear, guarding or a bite history are assessed honestly; some are better served by Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification program.
| If your dog… | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Is under a year and missing house manners | Foundation | Builds the basic cues and routines |
| Pulls hard on every walk | Either | Depends on whether the issue is skill or excitement |
| Barks and lunges at other dogs on leash | Advanced | Includes neutrality and distraction work |
| Is very fearful or guards things | Assessment first | May point to behavior modification |
Where to practise after the stay
Woodsom Farm is the obvious first stop. The city lists dog walking as one of the farm’s popular uses, and the citywide leash rule applies, so it is a big, open space to practise loose-leash walking with other dogs visible at a distance. Batchelder Park and Powow Hill add hills, trees and narrower paths once your dog is steady.
Downtown, around Market Square and Main Street, is a later step. Pavement, people and smells stack up quickly there, so wait until your dog can walk past a dog on the far side of the street without fixing on it. Our guide to practising neutrality in town shows how to break that down.
From Amesbury to Gloucester, by car or van
Most Amesbury families take I-495 to I-95 south, then Route 128 north through Peabody and Beverly to its end in Gloucester, a few minutes from 210 Eastern Ave. Book the free evaluation for a weekday, any time from 6:30 to 9:30 AM, and plan the drive back toward Amesbury after.
The Pup Van can collect board-and-train dogs from Amesbury too. The flat $10 fare covers only Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so ask for van pricing from Amesbury on the enquiry form.
License, vaccines, packing
Amesbury licenses dogs through the City Clerk at 62 Friend St, and the city’s application shows renewals due by March 31. Dogtown needs that license plus Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file. Send your dog’s regular food in daily portions, any medicine clearly labeled, and one item that smells of home.
