Board and train for Newburyport, MA dogs
Board and train for Newburyport, MA dogs: a one- or two-week fear-free stay in Gloucester, a free evaluation, and van pick-up from the city on request.
Why Newburyport owners choose a residential program
A board and train suits Newburyport families whose dog is fine at home and hard work everywhere else. The city packs a lot of dog-testing moments into a small footprint: brick sidewalks outside the Market Square shops, a waterfront full of strollers and gulls, and summer weeks when the whole town turns out for Yankee Homecoming. A week or two of daily, structured practice gives a dog more repetitions than a month of weekly classes.
Your dog lives at Dogtown at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester for the stay, sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, and trains every day with a fear- and force-free team. When the evaluation shows it is ready, your dog also spends time in a small playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament.
Foundation or Advanced for a Newburyport dog?
Choose Foundation if your dog needs the basics and Advanced if your dog knows them but cannot use them in public. That is the short version, and Gabby, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, makes the final call with you at the short assessment that opens every program.
The one-week Foundation program teaches sit, down, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and crate manners, and ends with one go-home lesson. The two-week Advanced program repeats all of that, then adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality around other dogs and people, and two scheduled coaching lessons. A young dog that lunges at bikes on the Clipper City Rail Trail is usually an Advanced candidate.
| Foundation | Advanced | |
|---|---|---|
| Stay | 1 week | 2 weeks |
| Typical Newburyport case | New puppy, jumping on guests, pulling to the front door | Adolescent who ignores you at Cashman Park or on the rail trail |
| Coaching for you | One go-home lesson | Two scheduled go-home lessons |
Where to practise in Newburyport once your dog is home
Newburyport gives you a rare thing on the North Shore: a city park with legal off-leash hours. Cashman Park allows off-leash dogs from 7:30 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM all year, while dogs stay leashed on the playground, courts, fields and walkways, according to the city’s off-leash dog park page. Use the off-leash window for recall games only once your dog’s recall holds on a long line.
The Clipper City Rail Trail is leash-only along its whole length, which makes it perfect for loose-leash practice with bikes, runners and strollers passing at a predictable distance. The city also keeps dogs off its public beach from May 15 to September 15, so beach work belongs to the shoulder seasons. Rules can change, so check the city’s current regulations before you go.
- Early weeks: a quiet block in the South End, short sessions, lots of rewards
- Next: the rail trail, rewarding your dog for looking at a bike and then back at you
- Later: Cashman Park’s off-leash hours, with a long line until recall is solid
- Last: Market Square on a weekday morning before the shops fill
Planning around Yankee Homecoming and summer weekends
If your dog struggles with crowds, time the stay so the go-home lessons land before the busiest weeks. Yankee Homecoming runs over late July and early August, with a kickoff at Cashman Park, fireworks and a parade; the 2026 festival ran from July 25 to August 2. That is a great final exam for a well-practised dog and a poor first outing for a dog fresh home.
Spring is often the sweet spot. A stay in April or May leaves you several weeks to build up from your street to the waterfront before the summer crowds arrive. Our page on summer board and train covers booking around the busy season.
Getting from Newburyport to 210 Eastern Ave
Most families take I-95 south to Route 128 and follow 128 north to where it ends in Gloucester, a few turns from Eastern Ave. Others prefer the slower Route 1A and Route 133 along the marshes through Rowley, Ipswich and Essex. The free evaluation runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM.
If the drive does not fit your week, the Pup Van can collect board-and-train dogs from Newburyport. The flat $10 fare covers only Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so ask for van pricing from Newburyport when you send the enquiry.
Paperwork and price before the stay
Bring proof of Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella vaccines and a current Newburyport dog license. The City Clerk at 60 Pleasant St issues licenses, and the city’s registration period runs from April 1 to June 1, with late fees after that. Pack pre-portioned food, labeled medication and one comfort item from home.
Dogtown does not publish a price. Each stay is quoted after the assessment because a one-week stay for a puppy and a two-week stay for a reactive adolescent are different jobs. The board and train cost guide explains what shapes the figure.
