Mill Pond’s recall rule, and why it matters here

West Newbury is unusually clear about what it expects. The town’s dog recreation page requires dogs everywhere to be leashed or under effective control, keeps them leashed at Pipestave Hill, Riverbend and other town trails, and allows up to two dogs per adult off leash on the Mill Pond trails only if they are under immediate voice recall. Posted maps show the leash zones.

Immediate voice recall is a high bar. It means your dog turns and comes the first time, while a squirrel runs, another dog plays or a rider goes by. That is a trained skill, built through many repetitions with rising distraction, and it is a core part of both Dogtown programs.

Horses on the trail

The town asks dog owners to keep dogs away from horseback riders, and with good reason. The Essex County Trail Association lists riding, a horse ring and trailer parking at Pipestave Hill, and a signed wading area for horses and dogs at Mill Pond. A dog that barks at or rushes a horse can cause a serious accident.

We can’t bring horses into the training building, but the skills that keep a dog safe around them are the ones we train every day: a reliable sit or down at a distance, a fast recall, an emergency U-turn on leash, and the habit of checking in with you when something big moves. The go-home lesson ends with a plan for practising them near the trails, starting far away.

Which program builds that kind of recall?

The one-week Foundation stay teaches the recall cue and the impulse control under it, along with sit, down, place, leash skills and crate manners. It is the right starting point for a puppy or young dog.

The two-week Advanced stay is usually the better fit if your goal is Mill Pond off leash. Week two is spent proofing cues against distraction and in real-world settings, and you get two scheduled go-home lessons. We never promise a finished off-leash dog; we make sure you leave knowing how to practise. Our page on recall and off-leash reliability goes deeper.

Life at Dogtown during the stay

Your dog sleeps in an overnight suite with comfortable bedding and 24/7 monitoring, and spends the day in a rhythm of short training sessions, rest and enrichment. If the evaluation shows it is ready, your dog also joins a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament.

Training is relationship-based and force-free, built on positive reinforcement and clear communication. You hear how things are going through a daily update, in a format confirmed at booking.

Dogs who are not ready for playgroup still have a full day: one-to-one sessions, puzzle feeders, sniffing games and quiet rest. Playgroup is added only when it helps, never as a test the dog has to pass.

Logistics from West Newbury

By car, most families take Route 113 to I-95 south, then Route 128 north to its end in Gloucester. The free evaluation runs weekday mornings from 6:30 to 9:30 AM. If that is hard to fit in, the Pup Van can collect board-and-train dogs from West Newbury; ask for van pricing when you enquire, since the flat $10 fare covers only the four Cape Ann towns.

Licenses come from the Town Clerk at 381 Main St. Town sources give different renewal dates, so check the current deadline with the clerk. Dogtown also needs Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file, and the stay is quoted after the assessment.

FAQs

Related questions

Will my dog be ready for Mill Pond off leash after two weeks?
Some dogs make big progress, but we don’t promise it. Keep a long line on at Mill Pond until your dog comes the first time, every time, in your practice sessions.
Can I bring two dogs?
Yes, and the town’s two-dogs-per-adult limit at Mill Pond is one reason to train both. Each dog gets its own assessment and plan, and Gabby will talk through whether they train together or apart.
What does the town mean by effective control?
The town page describes dogs being leashed or under effective control everywhere. If you are unsure how that applies on a given trail, ask the animal control officer or check the posted map.
Is the drive worth it compared with a closer trainer?
That is your call. Families choose Dogtown for the fear-free method and the go-home coaching. Our guide to choosing a board and train lists questions to ask any program.
Should my dog wade at Mill Pond’s signed horse and dog area?
Only once it ignores horses at a distance and comes back when called. Water plus horses plus other dogs is a lot of distraction at once, so treat it as a later goal, on a long line at first.
