Voice control on the Grass Rides is the skill to train

The Appleton Farms Grass Rides in South Hamilton are one of the best dog walks in Essex County, and one of the few where dogs may go off leash. The Trustees allow dogs off leash there under voice control, except on Lamson Field, where a leash is required; the property is open sunrise to sunset, per the Trustees’ Grass Rides page.

Voice control is a skill, not a personality trait. It means your dog comes when called with a deer in the trees, another dog bounding over and a rider in the distance. Building that is the core of the two-week Advanced program, and the start of it is in the one-week Foundation stay.

Horse country manners

Hamilton is horse country, and dogs here meet riders on the roads and the trails. A dog that barks, chases or freezes at the sight of a horse is a safety issue for everyone. The skills that help are the ones Dogtown practises every day: an instant check-in when something big moves, a sit or down at a distance, and a loose leash while something exciting passes.

We don’t keep horses at the facility, so the horse-specific part is practice you do at home, from far away at first. The go-home lesson ends with a plan for it, and our guide to neutrality in public explains how to build distance down gradually.

Program fit, briefly

Foundation, one week: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control, crate and household manners, and one go-home lesson. It suits puppies, young dogs and newly adopted dogs who need structure.

Advanced, two weeks: everything in Foundation, plus distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building, structured socialization and two go-home lessons. It suits adolescents and dogs whose cues vanish outdoors. Fearful dogs, guarders and dogs with a bite history are assessed carefully, and Gabby will recommend Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification program if that fits better.

Recall practice on the Grass Rides, step by step

Treat the Grass Rides as the last rung of a ladder, not the first. Start with recall games in your house and yard, using the exact cue and reward from the go-home lesson. Next, a long line on a quiet lane, calling your dog away from a sniff and paying generously when it comes. Only then try the Rides, still on the long line, at a quiet hour.

Drop the line only after weeks of success, and pick it back up the moment recall slips. Keep Lamson Field leashed, as the Trustees require, and call your dog to you and clip on well before any horse or rider reaches you. Our recall maintenance guide has the full routine.

A day at Dogtown

The day begins early with a short training session, then rest, then enrichment, then more training, in a rhythm designed to keep your dog keen rather than drilled. Dogs who pass the playgroup part of the evaluation spend some of the day with 7 to 10 others matched by size and temperament.

After the last session of the day comes a quiet night in an overnight suite, monitored around the clock. A daily update keeps you in the loop, and the format is confirmed at booking. The method is relationship-based, fear- and force-free, with positive reinforcement at its center.

From Hamilton to Gloucester

Most Hamilton families take Route 1A south into Beverly and pick up Route 128 north to its end in Gloucester. Others head out Route 22 to Essex and follow Route 133 east. Hamilton commuters often drop in for the free evaluation, which runs 6:30 to 9:30 AM on weekdays, on the way to work.

If the morning drive does not work, ask about the Pup Van. Board-and-train pick-up from Hamilton is available, priced on request, because the $10 flat fare covers only Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Mention it on the enquiry form.

License and paperwork

Hamilton dogs are licensed through the Town Clerk; the town runs its license year from April 1 to March 31 and expects dogs to be under control at all times. Confirm current dates and fees with the clerk. Our records need Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella before your dog can stay, and the stay is quoted after the assessment.

FAQs

Related questions

Is the Hamilton/Wenham station useful for training?
Yes, on quiet mornings. A few minutes settling on a mat while a train comes and goes is good neutrality practice. Follow MBTA pet rules if you ride.
Can my dog go off leash on the Grass Rides straight after the stay?
Only when the recall works on a long line in the same place. We don’t promise off-leash reliability; the go-home lesson shows you how to test it safely.
Does the stay include grooming?
Grooming is available at Dogtown as a separate service. Ask about board and train with grooming when you enquire.
What if my dog chases horses already?
Tell us in the enquiry. Gabby will look at whether it is excitement or fear and recommend the right program.
