Board and train for Wenham, MA families
Board and train for Wenham, MA dogs: a fear-free one- or two-week stay in Gloucester, a free temperament evaluation, and Pup Van pick-up priced on request.
Small town, busy main road
Wenham is quiet once you leave Route 1A, and that is part of the challenge. A dog raised on calm side streets and big yards can be overwhelmed the first time it walks along Main Street with trucks passing, or meets a crowd at a school or college event. Many Wenham owners come to us with a dog that is easy at home and a handful anywhere new.
That gap, between home and the wider world, is exactly what board and train is good at. Your dog practises cues many times a day, with handlers who raise the difficulty step by step, then you learn to carry on at the go-home lesson.
What owners in Wenham most often ask us to fix
Pulling on the leash, jumping on visitors, barking at the door and a recall that only works when nothing else is going on. Those four come up again and again, and every one of them is covered in both programs. Puppies arrive for house manners, crate routines and the first cues; adolescents arrive because the cues they had at five months have evaporated.
If the behavior is fear-based, such as hiding from visitors, growling when handled or lunging at dogs from worry rather than excitement, tell us in the enquiry. Those dogs need a careful plan, and our page on anxious dogs explains how we approach them.
Which stay fits a Wenham dog?
Choose the one-week Foundation stay for a puppy or a young dog who needs obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners. Choose the two-week Advanced stay if your dog has the basics but loses them outdoors, around other dogs or near traffic.
Advanced adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization, and you get two go-home lessons instead of one. Gabby will recommend one at the assessment, and if fear or guarding drives the behavior she may suggest Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification program instead.
| Foundation | Advanced | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | One week | Two weeks |
| For | Puppies, young dogs, foundational manners | Adolescents and real-world reliability |
| Coaching for you | One go-home lesson | Two go-home lessons |
Wenham’s license is tied to the town census
Wenham licenses dogs through the Town Clerk at Town Hall, 138 Main St, for a calendar year. The town’s dog registration page explains that registration information is mailed to households with the annual census at the end of December or early January, and that licenses are free for residents aged 70 and over.
Dogtown needs a current license before the stay, along with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. If your dog joined the family mid-year, call the clerk’s office at 978-468-5520 to get it registered before the evaluation.
Practice spots near Wenham
Next-door Hamilton has the Appleton Farms Grass Rides, where the Trustees allow dogs off leash under voice control except on Lamson Field. Bradley Palmer State Park, a short drive away in Topsfield, is popular for leashed walks; check DCR’s current dog rules before you go. In Wenham itself, check posted rules at each park or conservation area, since we could not confirm town-wide dog rules for them.
The Hamilton/Wenham commuter rail station is useful for calm-around-trains practice on a quiet morning. Build from easy to hard: your own street first, a trail second, the station or a village event last. Our guide to generalizing training to new places explains why each step matters.
Inside the stay
Every stay includes an overnight suite with comfortable bedding and 24/7 monitoring, daily training, enrichment in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility and, when the evaluation says your dog is ready, a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament. You receive a daily update, in a format confirmed at booking.
Training is relationship-based and fear- and force-free. Gabby, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, brings a B.S. in Biochemistry and more than a decade with behaviorally complex dogs, and she looks at the reason behind a behavior before deciding how to change it.
Getting there and booking
From Wenham, follow Route 1A south into Beverly and take Route 128 north to its end in Gloucester. Your free evaluation happens on a weekday, in the 6:30 to 9:30 AM window, so you can still be back in Wenham mid-morning. Pup Van pick-up is available for board-and-train dogs from Wenham, priced on request; the $10 flat fare is only for the four Cape Ann towns.
Start with the enquiry form; we reply within one hour on business days, then set up the assessment and the free evaluation.
