What Lynnfield’s bylaw actually asks of your dog

Lynnfield’s dog bylaw allows a dog off its owner’s property to be held on a leash or kept under control, and it counts voice or visual commands as control. It also requires a leash at schools, businesses and places of public assembly, and keeps dogs off turf fields and athletic playing surfaces. Check the current text with the Town Clerk before you rely on it.

Voice control is only real if your dog responds the first time, at a distance, with something interesting going on. If yours does not yet, the bylaw effectively means leash. Building that response, through many short, rewarded repetitions, is a big part of what a board and train does.

Busy places: MarketStreet, schools and game days

Lynnfield’s busiest dog moments tend to happen in the places the bylaw singles out for leashes: around the schools at pick-up, at the fields on game days and along the sidewalks of MarketStreet Lynnfield. Check each business’s own pet policy before bringing a dog shopping.

Those are good final-stage practice spots for the two-week Advanced program, which proofs cues against distraction and works on neutrality around people and dogs. Keep the first visits short, keep your dog on the edge of the activity, and leave while it is still going well. Our guide to manners at the vet and groomer uses the same approach indoors.

The problems Lynnfield owners bring us

Jumping on guests, pulling on the leash, barking at the door and a recall that only works in the kitchen. Those cover most Lynnfield enquiries, and every one of them is in the Foundation syllabus. For adolescents, the list usually adds ignoring cues outdoors and getting over-excited around other dogs, which is where Advanced comes in.

If your dog’s behavior is driven by worry rather than excitement, such as hiding from visitors, growling when handled, or barking at dogs from a distance, tell us in the enquiry. Those dogs need a slower, more careful plan, and the assessment is where we work out which one.

Foundation or Advanced?

Pick the one-week Foundation stay for puppies and young dogs who need obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners. Pick Advanced when the basics exist but evaporate outdoors; it adds outings, distraction proofing, neutrality, confidence building and two go-home lessons instead of one.

Gabby, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, recommends the program at the assessment. She brings more than ten years with behaviorally complex dogs and will tell you honestly if a dog’s fear, guarding or bite history calls for one of Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification programs instead.

How the stay is set up

Your dog lives at Dogtown for the program, in an overnight suite with comfortable bedding and 24/7 monitoring. Each day has short training sessions, rest and enrichment in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility, plus a small playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament when your dog is ready for one.

A daily update keeps you informed, and the method throughout is relationship-based and fear- and force-free. At the end, go-home coaching shows you how to ask for every cue, so the voice control the bylaw describes works for your voice, not just the trainer’s.

From Lynnfield to Eastern Ave

I-95 and Route 128 run right through Lynnfield. Head north, stay on Route 128 where it splits from I-95 in Peabody, and follow it to its end in Gloucester. A weekday slot between 6:30 and 9:30 AM covers the free evaluation, often before the morning rush builds.

Lynnfield is outside the Pup Van’s flat-fare towns, but board-and-train dogs can still be collected. Ask for van pricing from Lynnfield on the enquiry form.

License and records

Lynnfield licenses dogs through the Town Clerk, and licenses are free for owners over 70. Bring the current license and your vet’s record of Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella to the evaluation, and pack food in daily portions, labeled medication and one comfort item for the stay.

There is no published price: each stay is quoted after the assessment. Our cost guide explains what goes into the quote.

FAQs

Related questions

Can my dog walk off leash in Lynnfield after the stay?
Only where the bylaw allows and only if your dog is truly under voice control there. Practise on a long line first, and keep the leash on at schools, businesses and public gatherings.
Is two weeks enough for reliable voice control?
It gives a strong start, but reliability comes from continued practice. The two go-home lessons in Advanced show you how to keep building it.
Does Dogtown take dogs from south of Lynnfield too?
Yes. Families from across the North Shore and Greater Boston book stays; see board and train near Boston.
Do I need to be home for the van pick-up?
Pick-up times are arranged when you book. Ask for van pricing from Lynnfield at the same time.
