Newbury, MA board and train
Board and train near Newbury, MA and Byfield: a one- or two-week force-free stay in Gloucester, a free temperament evaluation and van pick-up on request.
A town where the dog rules follow the birds
Newbury is one of the few North Shore towns where wildlife sets the calendar for dog owners. The town bans dogs from its public beach on Plum Island from May 15 to September 15, between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM, even on a leash, to protect nesting piping plovers and least terns, according to the Town of Newbury. Fines climb with each offense.
Next door, the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge allows no dogs or pets at any time, including on foot, as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service explains. So a dog that bolts after shorebirds is not just a nuisance here, it is a real problem. Recall and a calm leash are the two skills that matter most in this town.
What the stay in Gloucester looks like
Your dog moves in at 210 Eastern Ave for one or two weeks. Each day mixes short training sessions with rest, enrichment in a 10,000 sq. ft. facility and, once the evaluation shows your dog is ready, a small matched playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs. Nights are spent in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, and you get an update every day; the format is confirmed at booking.
The program is led by Gabriella Pope, Dogtown’s Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, who has spent more than ten years with behaviorally complex dogs. She runs the short assessment at the start, where you set the goals together. Training is relationship-based and uses positive reinforcement, not force or intimidation.
Which length suits a Newbury dog
Pick the one-week Foundation stay for a puppy or a young dog who needs house manners, a settled crate, leash skills and a first recall. Pick the two-week Advanced stay for a dog who already knows the cues but forgets them the moment something interesting moves: a deer at the edge of a field, a horse on a trail, a gull lifting off the marsh.
Advanced spends its second week proofing skills against distraction and adds neutrality work, confidence building and structured socialization. It also gives you two go-home lessons instead of one. If your dog’s trouble is fear or guarding rather than excitement, Gabby may point you to Dogtown’s six- to ten-week behavior-modification program instead.
Practising at Old Town Hill and around the Upper Green
Old Town Hill, a Trustees property, is a natural next step after the stay. The Trustees require leashes there from April 1 to August 15 and allow dogs off leash under control for the rest of the year, while asking visitors to keep out of the salt marsh and grassland; read the current rules on the Trustees’ Old Town Hill page. That spring leash season lines up neatly with nesting season on the coast.
Start your practice somewhere dull, like your own road or driveway, and move to Old Town Hill once your dog can hold a sit while a car passes. Save Plum Island’s town beach for the off-season, in the hours the bylaw allows, and treat the refuge as off limits for dogs. For more on building difficulty in steps, see how to generalize training to new places.
- Week one home: cues in the kitchen and yard, exactly as taught at Dogtown
- Week two: leash walks on a quiet Byfield street, rewarding check-ins
- Week three: Old Town Hill on leash, building up to longer sits and downs
- Off-season: Plum Island’s town beach, long line first, with birds as the test
Getting your dog to Gloucester from Newbury
From the village or Byfield, the fastest route is usually I-95 south to Route 128 north, then 128 to its end in Gloucester. From the Plum Island side, Route 1A south through Rowley and Ipswich to Route 133 through Essex is the scenic alternative. The free evaluation is held on weekday mornings, starting as early as 6:30 and finishing by 9:30.
The Pup Van can also collect board-and-train dogs from Newbury. Its flat $10 fare applies only in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so we quote Newbury pick-up when you enquire.
Licensing, vaccines and what to pack
Newbury dogs are licensed through the Town Clerk at 12 Kent Way in Byfield; check the clerk’s page for the current renewal date and fees. We will also ask to see Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. Pack your dog’s usual food in pre-portioned bags, any medication clearly labeled, and one familiar item from home.
