The short answer for Rowley owners

Yes, there is a fear-free board and train within easy reach of Rowley, and it is in Gloucester rather than in town. Your dog stays with Dogtown for one week or two, trains every day, sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, and comes home ready for you to take over at a go-home lesson.

The route is a pleasant one. Take Route 1 or Route 1A to Route 133, follow 133 east through Ipswich and Essex, and you arrive in Gloucester without touching the highway. On a weekday morning, when evaluations run from 6:30 to 9:30 AM, that road is usually quiet.

Rowley’s trails make a great training ladder

Rowley’s open-space land gives you graded practice spots without leaving town. The town’s trail guide lists Hunsley Hills, about 104 acres, and Dodge Reservation, with more than two miles of trails over 200-plus acres, and asks for dogs to be leashed on both. Rough Meadows is different: no pets on the trails, so leave the dog at home there.

For bigger walks, Georgetown-Rowley State Forest allows dogs, and the state lists hunting among its activities. In the fall, put blaze orange on yourself and your dog and check the current hunting season dates before you go. A loud shot in the woods is also a good reason to have practised a calm, rewarded check-in.

  • Start: the driveway and your own road, using Dogtown’s exact cues
  • Then: Hunsley Hills on leash, rewarding loose-leash steps
  • Then: Dodge Reservation, adding sits and downs as walkers pass
  • Later: the state forest, with a long line and blaze orange in hunting season

Foundation, Advanced, or something longer?

Foundation is one week and fits puppies and young dogs who need the basics: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control, crate and household manners. Advanced is two weeks and fits adolescent dogs who know those cues at home but lose them outdoors, adding distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality and confidence building.

Some dogs need something else. If your dog is frightened, guards food or toys, or has a bite history, Gabby will say so at the assessment and may suggest Dogtown’s behavior-modification program, which runs six to ten weeks. Our one week vs two week comparison goes into the choice in detail.

Getting picked up, and taking the train later

The Pup Van can collect board-and-train dogs from Rowley if driving is awkward. Only Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea get the flat $10 fare, so ask for van pricing from Rowley when you send your enquiry.

Rowley also has its own commuter rail stop on the Newburyport/Rockport Line, the last one before Newburyport. A quiet platform on a weekend morning is a good neutrality exercise once your dog is home: arrive, settle on a mat, reward calm while a train comes and goes, and leave. MBTA pet rules apply, so check them before you ride.

Before the first night

Rowley licenses dogs through the Town Clerk at 139 Main St. The town’s renewal form shows licenses expiring on March 31, so check yours is current before the evaluation. Your dog’s Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella shots must be current and on file with us.

Pack food in daily portions, label any medication, and bring one comfort item that smells of home. Bedding and enrichment are provided. There is no published price: the stay is quoted after the assessment, and our cost guide explains why.

Once you have the go-home plan, the first fortnight at home matters most. Keep the cues, the reward markers and the routine exactly as Dogtown used them, and keep outings short and easy. Our guide to the first week home walks through it day by day.

FAQs

Related questions

Does Rowley have a leash law?
The town’s bylaws let the Animal Control Officer order owners to stop dogs running loose, and unrestrained dogs are banned in the cemetery. The open-space trails ask for leashes. Check the current bylaw with the town clerk if you are unsure.
Is Route 133 the best way to drive down?
For most of Rowley it is the most direct way, through Ipswich and Essex into Gloucester. Some families on the west side prefer I-95 south to Route 128 north.
Can my dog come home for a weekend in the middle?
The stay is designed to run continuously so the training builds day by day. Any scheduling questions are answered at the assessment and confirmed in writing at booking.
What if my dog does not pass the playgroup part of the evaluation?
Playgroup is only added when a dog is ready. Many dogs train well without it, and the evaluation helps Gabby plan the right mix of training, rest and enrichment.
Can I visit my dog during the stay?
Whether owners visit during a stay is not something we publish. Ask at the assessment; the answer is confirmed in writing at booking, along with how the daily updates arrive.
