The Reading rule change every dog owner should know

Since August 1, 2024, dogs are banned from Bare Meadow Conservation Area, apart from service dogs. If Bare Meadow was your usual loop, you will need a new practice route after the stay. Reading’s other conservation areas still welcome dogs, but on leash only, with no more than three dogs per person and a waste bag carried for each dog.

That leaves good options: Kurchian Woods, Marion Woods, Pinevale and Sledge Woods are all named on the town’s conservation list. Trails like these are ideal for loose-leash walking and for practising calm passing with other walkers. Check the town’s current conservation rules before each season, since they have changed recently.

How the drive shapes the plan

Reading sits north of Boston, close to where I-93 meets Route 128, which helps, but Gloucester is still a highway drive up I-95/Route 128 to the very end of the road. That is fine for a handful of visits and tiring for a weekly class.

A board-and-train stay keeps the trips to the essentials: a free evaluation on a weekday morning, drop-off, pick-up and go-home coaching. If even that is hard to fit around work, the Pup Van can collect your dog. The van’s $10 fare is for Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; for Reading, ask for van pricing when you enquire.

What your dog does during the stay

Every day mixes short training sessions with rest and enrichment, and nights are spent in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring. Once the evaluation shows your dog is ready, there is also time in a playgroup of 7–10 dogs matched by size and temperament. You get an update every day.

Foundation, the one-week stay, covers obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners. Advanced, the two-week stay, adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence and structured socialization. Gabby, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, recommends one at the opening assessment. Our daily schedule page shows what a typical day looks like.

From the conservation trails to Reading Square

Plan your first month home as a ladder. Start in your own street and yard, move to a quiet conservation trail, then try downtown along Main Street around Reading Square, where Route 28 traffic, shoppers and café tables add pressure.

The Reading commuter rail station on Lincoln Street, on the Haverhill line, is a useful final test once your dog can settle calmly in town. Watch a train arrive from a comfortable distance, reward calm, and leave before your dog tips over. Town rules also keep dogs off school grounds during school hours under the animal control bylaw as written in 2016; check the current version with the town.

  • Step 2: a quiet conservation trail on leash
  • Step 3: Main Street and Reading Square
  • Step 4: near the commuter rail station at off-peak times

License by March 31

Reading dog licenses run January to December and are due by March 31, with a late fee from April 1. They come from the Town Clerk at 16 Lowell Street. Bring the license and records for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella to the evaluation; all of them must be on file before the stay starts. Renewing well ahead of the evaluation saves a last-minute trip to Lowell Street. Our vaccination requirements page explains why each one matters in a group setting.

Price and next step

We quote every stay after the short assessment, and the evaluation is free. Reply time on business days is within one hour. If your dog’s main problem is fear or reactivity, mention it: Gabby may recommend Advanced, or a longer behavior-modification program of six to ten weeks. No program comes with promised results; every one ends with you knowing how to practise.

FAQs

Related questions

Where can I walk my dog in Reading now that Bare Meadow is closed to dogs?
The town’s other conservation areas, such as Kurchian Woods, Marion Woods and Sledge Woods, allow dogs on leash. Check the current conservation rules, because they changed in 2024.
How many dogs can I walk at once on Reading conservation land?
Up to three per person, all on leash, with a waste bag carried for each dog under the current rules.
Is Gloucester really the closest board and train to Reading?
Maybe not. People from Reading choose us for the fear-free approach, the matched playgroups and Gabby’s assessment, and they plan around the drive with a few visits or the Pup Van.
Does the Reading license need to be current for the whole stay?
It needs to be current when your dog arrives. If your renewal falls during the stay, renew first so there is no gap.
